Grades 1–3

Course Description

Children gain an appreciation for the wonder and function of the human body. Hands–on activities, experiments and discussion are used to educate students about the five senses, healthy food choices, and fitness. Children learn about germs and the importance of washing their hands.

Goal

Children will learn about the function of the five senses, and understand the importance of healthy food choices, fitness, and hygiene as they relate to the overall health of the body

Learning Objectives

  • Recall the complexity of the human body.
  • Draw and label body organs.
  • Demonstrate and recognize the effects of exercise on strengthening the heart.
  • List the five senses.
  • Describe in simple terms the anatomy and physiology of each of the five senses.
  • Conduct experiments utilizing the senses.
  • Classify foods into basic groups using the Food Guide Pyramid.
  • Distinguish the difference between healthy foods and "sometimes treats."
  • Demonstrate the importance of using soap and discuss how germs are spread.
