Safe Sitter

Ages 11- 13

Better Sitters Today...Better Parents Tomorrow!

Thousands of children ages 11 - 13 babysit on a regular basis. But how many of them are truly prepared for the responsibility they accept when they take a babysitting job? Would they be able to respond quickly and appropriately to a seriously injured or choking child? In the more likely event of a minor injury, would they handle the problem correctly? Would they comfort the child and provide appropriate first aid?

Safe Sitters are trained and prepared to perform these measures!

The Safe Sitter program was designed by a pediatrician to educate youngsters ages 11 - 13 in the skills of babysitting. This medically accurate course teaches safe and nurturing child care techniques, behavior management skills, and appropriate responses to medical emergencies. The Ruth Lilly Health Education Center is proud to be a Safe Sitter training provider.

In this competency-based, highly structured interactive program, students role play about a wide variety of topics including:

  • Practical Child Care Techniques
  • Safety Precautions
  • Care of Choking Infant/Child
  • Recognizing Emergencies
  • Calling for Emergency Help
  • Managing Common Problem Behaviors

Ready-to-teach modules also cover babysitting ethics and etiquette, as well as the business aspects of babysitting.

After attending a one-day, seven-hour Safe Sitter program, students must pass a rigorous written and practical exam to become a certified Safe Sitter.
