Pressure, Power and Drugs
Grades 7 & 8
Course Description
The facts about popular drugs are discussed and personal power in decision making is emphasized. Students will identify factors that influence personal choices and discuss how these choices can influence others. The class also allows students to identify pressures that can lead to drug use and discover the power of resistance techniques during a group activity.
Goal
Students will understand the dangers of drugs they are faced with in their environments and the importance of self-responsibility.
Learning Objectives
- Dispute common myths related to popular drug use.
- Recall the physical and psychological effects of drug use on the brain.
- Identify dangers related to the use/abuse of alcohol.
- Describe the effects of inhalant use on the body.
- Identify the hazards of abusing prescription and over-the-counter drugs.
- List short and long term health risks related to the use of tobacco.
- Recall the dangers of marijuana use.
- Brainstorm the influence of media and other pressures that could lead to drug use.
- Discuss the importance of positive support and strategies for dealing with feelings.
