Course Description

Students discuss the changes of puberty and are reassured of their unique yet varied maturation timetables. The endocrine and reproductive systems are reviewed and positive ways to deal with emotional changes, including communication with parents. Anatomical models, diagrams, and video are used to support discussions and enhance teaching of human growth and development, hygiene, and other adolescent concerns.

Goal

Students understand how their body changes during puberty and appreciate the
wonder of life.

Objectives

  • Describe the basic structure and function of the male and female reproductive systems.
  • Explain similarities and differences in growth and development within and between genders during puberty.
  • Review additional kinds of hygiene items needed to maintain cleanliness once puberty begins.
  • Define fertilization using simple terms.
  • Identify the basic role of heredity in reproduction.
  • Examine growth and development from conception to birth.
  • Give a simple overview of labor and delivery.
  • Explain how hormones influence growth, development, and emotional changes that take place during puberty.
  • Recognize how emotional changes can affect relationships with friends, parents, and others.

TAM - Transparent Anatomical Mannikin

TAM is the foremost teaching exhibit for general human biology. It is a clear, life-size female figure that describes body systems. TAM speaks and turns as lights illuminate the visible organs. The instructor re-emphasizes the important aspects of the presentation with interactive follow-up. TAM is also used at The University of Michigan, the Museum of Science and Industry-Chicago, and The Korean Children’s Center-Seoul.
