Course Description
Body systems and the effects of positive and negative health habits are reviewed. Models and games illustrate anatomy and physiology. Projected animation helps describe the body’s chemical and cellular defenses. A computerized module lets students compare nutritional values of various foods with special attention given to high calcium and low fat choices.
Goal
Students develop an appreciation for the complexity of the human body and understand the responsibilities in caring for it.
Objectives
- Specify smoking, exercise, and stress as factors that can affect body systems.
- Describe the chemical and cellular defenses of the body.
- Recognize that donating blood does not put you at risk for contracting HIV or any other disease.
- Explain the effect of ultraviolet light on skin tissue and sun protection factor (SPF) use.
- Recognize the need for positive dietary choices in obtaining an optimal level of health.
- Relate the role of calcium to the development of healthy bones and teeth.
- Recognize the effect of periodontal disease on overall general health.
