Course Description

Audiovisual technology reinforces an understanding of relevant health issues including heart disease and cancer. Participants discuss personal habit modification including sunscreen use, exercise, stress reduction, and cancer screening. Discussion of dietary guidelines emphasizes eating a variety of foods in moderation to decrease fat, increase fiber, and ensure calcium intake.

Goal

Participants learn about factors that effect cardiac health, ways to prevent and detect cancer, and understand the importance of a healthy diet in reducing the risk of disease.

Objectives

  • Recognize genetic factors in light of what can and what cannot be changed.
  • Identify the roles of LDL and HDL in cardiac health.
  • Identify the role of exercise in cardiac health.
  • Recognize the effect of stress and drug use on cardiac health.
  • Identify harmful effects of ultraviolet rays on the skin.
  • Differentiate between types of Sun Protection Factor.
  • Recognize the importance of self-examinations to detect early signs of cancer, specifically breast, testicular, and skin.
  • Recognize the components of a healthy diet.
  • Identify the role of fiber in cancer prevention.
  • Recognize the cause of osteoporosis and the importance of calcium intake during adolescence.
  • Explain the role of dietary fat in cardiac risk and cancer risk reduction.
