Food Power

Juniors – Grades 4–6
90 Minutes

Course Description

The hidden powers of food — to energize, satisfy and provide for growth — are explored. Scouts will review the importance of eating a balanced diet and learn how to analyze nutritional content using the Nutrition Fact Label. Groups will also practice making choices that provide much needed energy and nutrients. Using a take-home activity, Scouts can track their own food choices and pinpoint areas for improvement. It’s all about Food Power!

Goal

Scouts appreciate the importance of lifelong healthy eating habits.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss the necessity of food for growth, energy and health.
  • Review the basic function and organs of the digestive system.
  • Learn the importance of essential nutrients used by the body’s cells.
  • Become familiar with food groups and the nutrients provided.
  • Analyze the Nutrition Facts Labels of various foods.
  • Recall that advertisements may encourage unhealthy food choices.
  • Review one's own eating patterns with a food diary.
  • State importance of keeping life in balance with healthy food choices, physical activity and other health behaviors.
