Food for Thought

Grades 4–6

Course Description

Groups explore the essentials of nutrition and learn to make proper food choices. Discussion, games, and models are used to explain the role of nutrients in health and the influence of advertising on dietary habits. Students examine daily meal patterns and play a trivia game to read a nutrition facts label.

Goal

Students will be empowered to make healthy food choices through improved knowledge.

Objectives

  • Identify the purpose of eating food.
  • Recognize specific nutrients and their role in body function.
  • Explain the nutrition facts label.
  • Recognize the importance of heart healthy diets.
  • Recall several health consequences to poor diet.
  • Recognize the importance of eating from all food groups and maintaining a balance between activity and intake.
  • Assess the nutritional value of common foods.
  • Relate the role of calcium to the development of healthy bones and teeth.
