Grades 7 to Adult

Course Description

The long term benefits of physical fitness are promoted to students. The four components of fitness - cardiovascular health, muscular strength, endurance, and flexibility - are described with an emphasis on improving each of them. The need to assess fitness levels and the importance of nutrition are also reviewed.

Goal

To provide students with a clear understanding of fitness and its importance in one’s quality of life.

Objectives

  • Define fitness.
  • Describe the basic components of fitness and why each is important to overall health.
  • List benefits of fitness.
    Recognize how to improve each of the specific fitness components.
  • Explain ways to prevent and treat minor injuries.
  • Recognize the need to assess personal level of fitness before starting an exercise program.
  • Discuss the importance of proper nutrition.
  • Recognize the importance of balancing caloric intake with caloric expenditure.
