Grades 4–6

Course Description

Children gain an appreciation for similarities and differences as they discover the wonder and function of human body systems. Hands–on activities, experiments and discussion are used to educate students about healthy food choices and fitness.

Goal

Children learn about the function and care of the digestive and circulatory systems, understanding the importance of healthy food choices and fitness as they relate to the overall health of the body.

Learning Objectives

  • Define digestion as a process of breaking down food into substances the body needs and uses.
  • Simulate the path food takes as it passes through the digestive system, explaining the function of each digestive organ.
  • Discuss the basic anatomy of the circulatory system and how it functions with the respiratory system.
  • Give examples of nutritious, low–fat, high-fiber snack choices.
  • Categorize foods into basic food groups using the Food Guide Pyramid.
  • Demonstrate and recognize the effects of exercise on strengthening the heart.
