Course Description
Discussion focuses on what drugs are and how they work. Students learn that prescription and over-the-counter medications can be helpful or harmful, depending on how they are used. Classes discuss how tobacco and alcohol can be addicting. Students role play how their feelings affect behaviors.
Goal
Students will understand what drugs are and how they work. They will become aware of how feelings affect behaviors.
Objectives
- Define the term “drug”.
- Distinguish legal from illegal forms of drugs.
- Explain how prescription and over-the-counter medications can be helpful or harmful, depending on how they are used.
- Give examples of common dangers related to tobacco use.
- Recognize different kinds of emotions and how they affect behaviors.
- Describe the basic functions of the brain.
- Explain the role of the nervous system in the body.
- Describe how alcohol affects the body.
