Drugs: Choice or Chance
Grades 5 & 6
Course Description
Classes review the basics of the circulatory, respiratory, and nervous systems. Students discuss the effects of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and inhalants on the body. Anatomical models and teaching activities facilitate learning. Students use role play, video, and discussion to understand the importance of life skills in making healthy choices.
Goal
Students will know how specific drugs harm the body and they will understand how life skills help make important decisions.
Objectives
- Define the terms “drug” and “addiction”.
- Describe the basic anatomy and physiology of the brain.
- Recognize how specific drugs change basic neuron activity.
- Describe how alcohol affects the body.
- State health risks related to marijuana use.
- Recall the dangers of inhalant use.
- Explain how drugs enter the body by way of the respiratory system.
- Name three poisons found in tobacco smoke and discuss their effects on the body.
- Identify the consequences of using chewing tobacco.
- Give examples of life skills used to resist negative peer pressure.
