Body Tune-Up!

Grades 1–3

Course Description

This introduction to the human body focuses on the relationship between nutrition, exercise, sleep and growth, especially as each relates to the structure and care of bones, muscles and teeth. Students learn about germs and the importance of washing their hands. Students learn basic first aid steps for common injuries as well as the basic items in a first-aid kit.

Goal

Children learn how exercise, sleep, good nutrition and personal hygiene promote health. Children understand the basic steps in appropriate first-aid care.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify exercise as being the work muscles have to do to stay strong and grow.
  • Describe the relationship between and the importance of good nutrition, exercise and sleep for energy, growth and body maintenance.
  • Demonstrate how hands can spread germs and discuss the importance of hand washing.
  • Recite the names of the five food groups and categorize foods into one of the groups.
  • Discuss the importance of caring for teeth.
  • Demonstrate proper hygiene practices.
  • Discuss the proper way to care for cuts and nose bleeds.
  • List items found in a basic first-aid kit.
  • Relate that animal bites and stings are potentially dangerous.
  • Explain how to call for help in an emergency.
