Body Shock: Your Reality Shows!

Grades 9–12

Course Description

This program focuses on nutrition using keynote, games and discussion. Students consider healthy vs unhealthy eating concepts. They analyze the factors leading to obesity and discuss the consequences of obesity related illnesses in the US. They also gain an understanding of BMI and BMR as they discuss what goes into making a healthy body. Students acknowledge the varied uses of calcium in the body and identify factors related to calcium absorption and intake. The difference between Type 1 Diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes will be fleshed out through video, games and experiments.

An extended class is also offered which has a focus on identifying the purpose of LDL, HDL and triglycerides as well as understanding different types of ingestible fats. This is done through games and keynote presentation.

Goal

Students will appreciate the role of nutrients and physical activity in creating a healthy body.

Objectives

60 minute program

  • Identify factors contributing to overweight and obesity in our society.
  • Discuss the concepts of BMI (Body Mass Index) and BMR (Basal Metabolism Rate).
  • Recognize the impact of nutrient deficiencies on growth and development.
  • Recall the differences between aerobic and anaerobic activity and the benefits of each.
  • Define diabetes and how it affects the body.
  • Relate calcium intake to bone disease.

90 minute program

  • Differentiate between the helpful and harmful fats in the diet.
