ABCs of HIV

Course Description

The goal of the Starter Facts program is to help people develop a knowledge base about HIV and AIDS and skills in separating facts from misinformation and opinions. Participants also learn how to use the American Red Cross HIV/AIDS Facts Book effectively. In addition, this course helps prepare participants to take the multiple–choice HIV/AIDS Facts Test.

The Starter Facts course helps participants learn to use skills and information in a professional capacity (e.g., as an educator, counselor or volunteer). It is not an HIV/AIDS prevention course and, therefore, is not a substitute for an HIV education and prevention community session. People who may benefit from taking this course include individuals who:

  • Wish to learn about or review factual information about HIV and AIDS
  • Want to learn about or review HIV/AIDS facts for professional, occupational or academic reasons
  • Want to learn or review the facts about HIV and AIDS for personal development

Goal

To develop a knowledge base about HIV and AIDS and skills in distilling fact from misinformation and opinion.

Learning Objectives:

  • Locate factual information in the American Red Cross HIV/AIDS Facts Book.
  • Distinguish between HIV and AIDS.
  • Recognize how HIV infection progresses.
  • Recognize how HIV is and is not spread.
  • Identify how to prevent the spread of HIV.
  • Score 80% or higher on a multiple-choice HIV/AIDS Facts Test.
