Approaching Adulthood

Course Description
A brief overview of the reproductive system is given. Students develop a positive attitude and appreciation for the physical, emotional, and social changes they are experiencing as they approach adulthood. Sexually transmitted infections and other consequences of adolescent sexual activity are discussed. Pressures from the media and peers to be sexually active are analyzed and abstinence is advocated as a viable and preferred alternative.
Goal
Students understand the different aspects of their reproductive system and appreciate the importance of making responsible decisions.
Objectives
- Review the anatomy and physiology of the male and female reproductive systems and the changes that occur during adolescence.
- Recognize the relationship between the physical body and sexual feelings.
- Identify the physical, social, and emotional effects of sexual involvement.
- Name abstinence as the only certain way to avoid STIs (STDs) and pregnancy.
- Recognize the influences that affect an adolescent’s choices and behaviors.
- Recognize the power within a person to make healthy decisions regarding sexuality.
- Identify abstinence as a viable and desirable alternative to sexual activity.
