Methods of Giving
There are many ways to contribute to the Health Education Center. Whether outright or deferred, the tax advantages of charitable giving may be substantial. Individuals should consult with their attorneys or tax advisors to determine tax benefits when making gifts other than cash.
A. Gifts of Cash and Personal Property
- Cash – Every dollar you donate to the Ruth Lilly Health Education Center is tax deductible as proscribed by law.
- Appreciated Stock – If you have marketable securities that have grown in value, the tax laws may make it possible for you to make an important gift to the Center at a remarkably low after-tax cost.
- Real Estate – Real estate that has increased in value is also an excellent way to give.
- Personal Property – Antiques, paintings and other "collectibles" can be valuable assets for giving.
B. Deferred or Planned Gifts
- Life Insurance – Immediate tax savings can be gained by assigning ownership of a life insurance policy to the Center, with added tax savings for the premiums you may pay in future years.
- Life Income Gifts – This special category of gifts (annuities, remainder trusts, unitrusts, etc.) can provide you with immediate income tax deductions, a life income, avoidance of capital gains tax, and reduction of estate tax. These are usually funded with appreciated securities or other assets that would be highly taxed (retirement plans, etc.).
- Charitable Lead Trusts – You can transfer income-producing property to a trust for a number of years, and later the property either comes back to you or goes to a family member or other beneficiaries. Trust income is paid to the Center while the trust is in force.
- Wills & Bequests – Because a bequest is a gift made in your will, you retain full use of your gift property during your life. A bequest may take many forms, such as specific, residuary, or contingent provisions. In all cases there may be significant estate tax savings.
